  • WHAT KIND OF WOOD DO YOU USE?
All stocks are manufactured from Hand Select grade of American Black Walnut having straight grain and of the type as originally used by Winchester and Marlin .

DO YOU HAVE OTHER TYPES OF WOOD AVAILABLE?
We reproduce only original issue pattern stocks in American Black Walnut as were most originals.

WHAT GRADES OF WOOD ARE AVAILABLE?
Currently we offer Hand Select Standard grade only.  This grade was originally furnished on most non-special ordered rifles.  Stock blanks are selected and layed-out to insure straight grain patterns in the wrist area for strength.

CAN YOU FURNISH FANCY GRADES OF WALNUT?
Currently we offer Hand Select Straight Grain grade only.  We occasionally  have fancy grade in inventory but not in sufficient quantity to list.  Your Email inquirey is welcomed and we will check current availability of fancy grades.

    HOW DO THEY FIT?
In machining we allow for minor original manufacturing tolerance differences by inletting slightly tight by .005" to .0010", and oversize by approximately 1/16".

HOW MUCH WORK MUST BE DONE TO FIT TO MY RIFLE?
The difficult parts are done for you.  The final fitting requires opening the tang inletting by a few thousands of an inch to match your particular rifle. The butt has been milled to fit an original buttplate, however there are also minor differences in the buttplate castings over the years, and any particular rifle may require some additional fitting.

    WHAT TOOLS ARE NEEDED?
To fit stocks to your rifle you will need a wood rasp or coarse file, small chisel or gouge, coarse, medium and fine sandpaper.  A hand or electric drill and drill bits, and screwdriver for installing srews.

    ARE THE SCREW HOLES DRILLED?
The drilling of the screw holes are the last steps in the fitting process.. Holes cannot be properly located until the stocks are final fitted.

WHAT TYPE FINISH SHOULD I USE?
Most original Winchester stocks were finished in hand rubbed oil.  Varnish was a special order option.  Marlin stocks were usually furnished in a varnish, special order stocks could be furnished in hand rubbed oil if so requested.  We suggest, for best results, you use a hand-rubbed oil finish on either Winchester or Marlin stocks.  This type finish is taken into the wood, as opposed to being only on the surface, and affords a satin finish that is easily maintained.  Should the stocks become scratched, it is a simple matter to re-oil the damaged area.  No extensive varnish removal is required before refinishing using oil.

WILL MY REPLACED STOCKS LOOK LIKE THE ORIGINALS?
Our stocks are duplicated from original Winchester and Marlin patterns, and when fitted and finished correctly the stocks will have the same contours and dimensions as the originals.  You may choose to stain the walnut darker, add a red cast or leave the natural colors.

WILL YOU CUSTOM FIT AND FINISH YOUR STOCKS TO MY RIFLE?
Our stock shop does offer this service.  Over the years any particular rifle model was produced there  is found minor dimensional differences which affect the final fit of the stocks, also should the original buttstock be broken there will likely be some degree of bent tangs.  These problems can usually always be overcome by our Stock Shop Gunsmiths.  If you feel uncomfortable about fitting your stocks see our SERVICES page.

WILL YOU USE MY GUNSTOCK BLANKS?
Sorry, No.  Using customers wood or blanks requires special tracking and handling through the shop, for which we are not prepared.

WILL YOU DUPLICATE MY ORIGINAL STOCKS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PATTERN?
We offer only stocks for which we have patterns.  Turning a customers stock into a pattern, to work in our machines, is a rather extensive process requiring a lot of time and additional materials.  The cost to do so prohibits us from offering this service.

WILL YOU CUSTOMIZE A STOCK FOR ME?
We are a production shop designed to produce stocks only from our original patterns having issue dimensions and contours.

CAN I USE A PISTOL GRIP STOCK ON MY STRAIGHT GRIP RIFLE?
Straight grip and pistol grip stocks are not interchangeable.  You must use the same type as on your rifle.

WILL YOU FURNISH A SEMI-FINISHED STOCK LESS INLETTING?
Mutiple stocks are machined at on time from a completely inletted pattern.  Our shop policy prohibits the down-time that would be required to make the necessary changes in the machinery to  furnish stocks not completely machined to the pattern.

    I HAVE A... WILL YOU MAKE A...?
Sorry no.  Only patterns as listed are available.

    DO YOU DO REPAIRS ?
We do offer repair services..  We carry an extensive inventory of parts and can repair most problems.   E-mail questions concerning repairs needed.
